Regeneration and Transdetermination: New Tricks from Old Cells
نویسنده
چکیده
In this issue of Cell, Sustar and Schubiger (2005) address a longstanding question in regeneration biology: How is pluripotency achieved during regeneration? The authors have examined the cell cycle and growth characteristics of multipotent regenerating and transdetermining Drosophila cells and come up with some surprising findings.

متن کاملHepatic regeneration from hematopoietic stem cells
In recent years, numerous investigators have reported novel cellular fates of multipotent stem or progenitor cells. In this review, we discuss the unexpected observations that hematopoietic stem cells can contribute to the hepatocyte lineage in humans and in rodent models of liver disease and regeneration. A key unresolved issue regarding hepatic regeneration from hematopoietic stem cells is wh...
متن کاملA screen for genes that function in leg disc regeneration in Drosophila melanogaster
Many diverse animal species regenerate parts of an organ or tissue after injury. However, the molecules responsible for the regenerative growth remain largely unknown. The screen reported here aimed to identify genes that function in regeneration and the transdetermination events closely associated with imaginal disc regeneration using Drosophila melanogaster. We screened a collection of 97 rec...
متن کاملNeuronal Polarization: Old Cells Can Learn New Tricks
Regeneration was once thought to be exclusive to young neurons. Now, a new study shows that functional and interconnected hippocampal neurons have the potential to quickly recover from losing an axon. They do so by signaling a dendrite to change its specification and replace the missing axon by rearranging the microtubule cytoskeleton.
متن کاملWingless induces transdetermination in developing Drosophila imaginal discs.
Drosophila imaginal discs, the precursors of the adult fly appendages, have been the subject of intensive developmental studies, particularly on cell determination. Cultured disc fragments are recognized not only for the ability to maintain their determined state through extra cell divisions but also for the ability to transdetermine, or switch to the determined state of a different disc. An un...
